Arsenal optimistic about Gabriel deal

With the current spate of the Arsenal defence, it was not surprising that the club are inching towards the signing of Villarreal defender Gabriel Paulista. According to Goal, Arsenal have reached an advanced stage in the negotiation for the services of the prolific Brazilian and are reportedly ready to match the 20 million euros required to trigger his transfer. Same source have also confirmed that Gabriel’s agent is already in London to discuss the specifics of the deal.

The Gunners ought to have gotten the defender’s deal done and dusted if not for the complicated process of getting a work permit which is required for players outside the European Union. According to a clause concerning non EU players, only those who have started 75% of their country’s matches over the last two years can automatically qualify for the work permit and unfortunately for the Brazilian, his talents haven’t been enough to earn him a single cap for his country just yet.

Arsenal manager, Arsene Wenger had maintained since the last summer his intention to hire a central defender after the exit of Thomas Vermaleen and his failure to achieve this before the start of the season is one of the reasons why the Gunners have struggled at the back so far this term with only 6 defenders to cover for the four defensive positions.

On the brighter side, there is a Home Office appeal process that is run by the FA that allows some sort of waiver if it can be proven that the concerned player has exceptional talents to significantly improve the quality football at the highest level in England and the North London club are optimistic that Gabriel would make the cut seeing as the defender is an integral member of the Villarreal defence which ranks joint-third in the La Liga having conceded 17 goals in 19 outings.
