Atletico will fight on for La Liga – Godin

By on February 18, 2015

Just when they should be piling more pressure at the top of the La Liga, defending champions, Atletico Madrid fell to a 2-0 defeat in their road trip to Celta Vigo. Diego Simeone’s men had whet the appetite of fans and foes alike when they humbled Real Madrid to a 4-0 bashing but their recent defeat returns them to the earlier stance – 7 points adrift of city rivals Real Madrid.

Despite all these, Diego Godin has downplayed the rumours that Athletic Club might be waning off their focus on the La Liga tittle. The defender believes that the absence of key squad members like Koke and Arda Turan was the major reason why the champions appeared frail against Celta Vigo. Two second half goals from Nolito and Fabiuan Orellana saw off the Madrid opposition and Simeone will have to deal with the fact that he is currently 6 and 7 points behind Barcelona and Real Madrid respectively.

While speaking to reporters after the match, Godin revealed that the defeat was due to the fact that the team were missing very integral players in the midfield. While noting that it really hurts the team to have lost to Celta Vigo, he maintained that they will have to stay focused and move forward.

The defender explained that the attitude with which they approached the first half was totally different from the second half but insisted that they will continue to fight to retain the La Liga tittle this season while also focusing on Champions League success. On the controversial handball, Godin stated that he believes the referee saw the handball but that he didn’t think that the referee would award a spot kick in that regard. He promptly added that it would be unfair to say that Celta Vigo won because of the handball because they really played well for the win while Atletico did not.
