Brasileirao: Gremio v Goias

By on July 16, 2014

The Brasileirao action kicks off again after the World Cup came to an end this past sunday, with Gremio set to face Goias in a game between two sides who are currently level on points in the league table.

It will be interesting to see how the two teams kick off after a long break during the 2014 World Cup. Both sides had almost identical records before the break and the question is whether or not they can restart their campaign with the same momentum or not. Many would argue that the long break would have offered the players adequate resting time and allow them to start with a fresh outlook. However, it can also be argued that they layoff might have a negative effect on their respective momentums and a month or so without football action might effect the players’ form. This should make the game an interesting one to watch.

Gremio are currently 6th in the league table, level on points with their opponents in this game and only one point ahead of Atletico Mineiro, Sport and Santos. Furthermore, they are just four points behind the league leaders Cruzeiro and they must secure a win in this game if they are to put pressure on the current league leaders as well as their remaining rivals for the Brasileirao title. Their own league position is under threat as well because if they slip up in this game, it will allow their opponents Goias, or the teams that are trailing them, the likes of Santos and Atletico Mineiro to overtake them. That would not be a very good way to restart the campaign and there is no doubt that they coach as well as the players will try their best to avoid such a situation.

Gremio were in decent form before the long break with two wins from their last five Brasileirao games while drawing two and losing one. They were on a three game winless streak however, before the start of the World Cup and with their last game against Palmeiras ending in a 0-0 draw. The coach will be looking to have a much better start after the break and must motivate his side to overlook that run and start anew.

Goias have had an almost identical campaign to Gremio so far in the Brasileirao with boths sides winning four, drawing three and losing two of their opening nine games. However, Goias do find themselves in 7th, one place below Gremio on goal difference. Coach Ricardo Drubscky knows that his side have a great chance to overtake Gremio in this game as both are returning from a long layoff which is bound to effect their form and if Goias can keep their heads and get all three points from this game then they will overtake Gremio. Not only that, they may find themselves in the top 3 as well if the remaining games form the week end in their favour. Furthermore, a win is also necessary in terms of keepin the teams that are trailing them, at bay.

Goias themselves were on a two game winless streak before the World Cup kicked up with the side losing their last game against Coritiba in a 3-0 defeat. That game was a great chance for Goias to overtake Gremio as they had dropped points in their game as well but it was not meant to be. Drubscky must however, now inspire his side to forget that horrible display and take the game to Gremio and fight for all three points.

Gremio will be without Gabriel for this game who is still out with an injury. Cristian Riveros, however, has returned from injury and might regain his spot in midfield. New signing Giuliano is also available and might be handed a start in this game. Luan is expected to start on the left Barcos starting upfront as the lone striker.

Goias have no real injury worries ahead of this game and will start with their best starting XI. Coach might be tempted to start the same team that impressed in the Brasileirao before the World Cup. Pedro Henrique has returned to full fitness and will regain his starting role alongside Jackson. Ramon is expected to start on the right flank while both Liniker and Esquerdinha will fight for the spot on the left flank.
