Bundesliga: Augsburg v Wolfsburg Tips

By on March 9, 2015

Augsburg host high flying Wolfsburg at the SGL Arena in Augsburg on Saturday night as they look to get back into the race for top 4 against a side that do not seem to be dropping points any time soon.

Augsburg have enjoyed a good campaign in the Bundesliga this season and despite their recent string on poor results, they still find themselves occupying one of the European qualification spots.  That being said, coach Marcus Weinzierl will be hoping that his side can soon regain the form from the start of the season and reclaim their position in the top 4. They are currently 6th in the Bundesliga rankings with 35 points from twenty three games and are level on points with 5th placed Schalke 04 and just a point behind 4th placed Bayer Leverkusen. All three of these sides are fighting for a place in the top 4 and it is still tight as ever. With just a 1 point gap between the sides, every game counts and Weinzierl’s side cannot afford to drop points any more. They have a tough game this weekend against 2nd placed Wolfsburg who have been one of the best sides in the league this season and undoubtedly this game will test the mettle of Weinzierl’s team. They are playing at home and will be looking to impress in front of their home fans. If they can keep their focus in the defensive areas and avoid the clumsiness they displayed in the last few games while makeing the most of their chances, then there is no doubt that Augsburg can get a good result here. Grabbing all 3 points could be a tough task but they can certainly go for a draw.

Augsburg have been in very poor form since their win against Borussia Dortmund at the start of February. They have won just one of their last five games while losing two and drawing on two occassions in all competitions. Their last game was the disappointing away loss against Hertha Berlin. Augsburg are undefeated in 9 of their last 10 home matches in the Bundesliga and have scored at least 2 goals in 7 of their last 8 home matches inthe Bundesliga.

Wolfsburg have been one of the best sides in the Bundesliga this season which is evident from their recent success against the likes of Bremen, Leverkusen and Bayern Munich. The most astonishing thing about Dieter Hecking’s side is their ability to come back from a deficit to win games and they have showcased this ability against both Bremen and Leverkusen. And with the group of players that Hecking possesses, the sky is the limit for this Wolfsburg team. They currently find themselves 2nd in the Bundesliga ranking with 50 points from twenty three games and are just 8 points behind current champions and league leaders Bayern Munich. Furthermore, they have a 10 point lead over 3rd placed Borussia Monchengladbach, so their position in the league table is adequately secure. However, Dieter will not settle for that and will look to get maximum points from the remaining games so they can finish as close to Bayern Munich as possible, and maybe even challenge them for the title come the end of the season, however that idea might be too farfetched. They face and Agusburg side who certainly have the ability to get maximum points from this game, but have been going through a rough patch and it would take a massive error from Wolfsburg to lose this one. But Dieter’s side will be aware of Augsburg’s threat and the fans can expect an aggressive start from Wolfsburg, to take control of the game. They are the favorites to get all 3 points here.

Wolfsburg have been in excellent form of late having won four of their last five games while drawing just one, in all competitions. That draw came against Sporting Lisbon in the Europa League. Their last Bundesliga game was the entertaining 5-3 away win over Werder Bremen. Wolfsburg have won 6 of their last 7 matches in the Bundesliga and are undefeated in their last 5 matches against Augsburg in all competitions.

Augsburg have quite a few names on the absentees list ahead of this game as Jan Moravek, Sascha Molders, Tim Matavz, Dominik Reinhardt, Paul Verhaegh and Alexander Esswein will miss out owing to injuries. Jeong-Ho Hong is unfit for this game and will miss out as well.Markus Feulner is expected to start at right back in this game while Raul Bobadilla will switch back to the right wing as Won Ji is expected to lead the attack.

Wolfsburg have a couple of players injured ahead of this game. Felipe Loes and Aaron Hunt are still unavailable and will not feature. Ivan Perisic is doubtful for this game and will be assessed closer to kickoff. Vierinha is expected to beat Sebastian Jung to the right back spot while Joshua Guilavogui is expected to start ahead of Maximilian Arnold.
