Chelsea v Paris St. Germain Football Prediction

By on March 12, 2015

Paris St. Germain travel to Stamford Bridge in London on Wednesday ahead of the 2nd leg of their Round of 16 meeting as the Parisians look to avoid the same outcome from last season.

Chelsea were definitely the happiest of the two sides after the 1st leg. Jose Mourinho’s side travelled to the Parc de Princess in Paris and came away with a valuable 1-1 draw in what was a fairly entertaining game. Branislav Ivanovic opened the scoring for the Blues in the first half after some poor defending from Paris St. Germain from a set piece. But Chelsea’s lead was neutralized in the second half when Edinson Cavani equalized for Paris St. Germain. Jose Mourinho being content with the scoreline opted for a more defensive approach after the equalizer and despite numerous chances coming Paris St. Germain’s way, they failed to score the second goal handing Chelsea the advantage ahead of the second leg.

Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho will have very clear ideas about how his side have to approach this game, to progress to the next round. Chelsea have a valuable away goal and only need a goal less draw to go through, and Mourinho being the master of defensive tactics is the best man for the job. They are playing this game at home and will make it very difficult for Paris St. Germain to score. Chelsea will go into this game with a very conservative approach and try to frustrate the PSG attack by sitting deep and defending tightly. Mourinho’s focus will be to keep a clean sheet for as long as possible and as the game progresses and the Paris St. Germain side get frustrated, they can find gaps in the French side’s defense and go for the killer blow. The pressure is certainly on Paris St. Germain to get a result here and that is something that Mourinho’s side will capitalize on. Last season they progressed after coming back from a 3-1 defeat in the first leg and certainly there odds are even better this term.

Chelsea have been in good form lately having won three of their last five games in all competitions while drawing the other two. Their last game was the hard fought 1-0 away win against West Ham United in the Premier League. Chelsea are undefeated in their last 7 matches in the Champions League.

Paris St. Germain are certainly under pressure after the result from the first leg. Laurent Blanc knows how they failed to progress to the next round even with a 3-1 first leg advantage, last season which makes their chances even slimmer this term. However, he will feel that Paris St. Germain have gained some valuable experience from last season’s defeat and will not repeat the same mistakes. They have an uphill task in this second leg as they have to travel to Stamford Bridge, which is a fortress for the Blues, and get a good result there. Paris’ St. Germain’s main objective is to score a goal as early as possible to neutralize Chelsea’s away goal, which would make the tie wide open. But that is something that could go against them as well as Chelsea will definitely sit back and absorb pressure and try to hit them on the counter. Thus, the Parisians have to be very cautious in going forward. Chelsea are the favorites to go through, on paper, owing to their away goal advantage, but if the Paris St. Germain players can put in a good shift then they may very well get a good result and go through.

Paris St. Germain have been in good form themselves having won three of their last five games in all competitions while drawing two. They faced Racing Club de Lens in their last game in the Ligue 1, winning by a 4-1 margin.

Chelsea have only one injury worry ahead of this game as John obi Mikel will miss out. Nemanja Matic is doubtful for this game but could make a return in time to start here. Cesc Fabregas is expected to play in an advanced role as Oscar might drop to the bench. In that case, Ramires will start in midfield alongside Nemanja Matic.

Paris St. Germain will be without a few of their key players ahead of this game. Serge Aurier and Lucas Moura are still out with injuries and will not be available. Yohan Cabaye is doubtful for this game and David Luiz could again start as the defensive midfielder alongside Marco Verratti and Blaise Matuidi. Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Edinson Cavani and Ezequiel Lavezzi are expected to start this game.
