Corinthians v Internacional

By on July 17, 2014

Corinthians will restart their Brasileirao campaign with a game against 5th placed Internacional in what is definitely the game of this round as both sides look to put pressure on each other as well as the league leaders Cruzeiro.

With both sides returning to football action after a long lay off during the World Cup, it’s hard to ignore what effect it will have on their form as both were on a good run before the World Cup and it will be interesting to see whether or not they can restart with the same momentum or not. If anyone of these sides can take advantage and restart their campaign with a bang, then they might very well run away with all three points in this one. With both teams being level on points, either side will be happy with a draw but there is no doubt that both sides will play for all three points to go ahead of each other on points.

Corinthians are currently 3rd in the Serie A standings and are just three points behind league leaders Cruzeiro. Furthermore, even though they are two places ahead of their opponents for this game, the two teams are tied level on points and this could prove to be a very decisive game for Corinthians if they are to maintain their position and potentially generate a lead over Inter. Coach Mano Menez knows full well that this is a game that cannot lose at any cost as it will cost them their 3rd place position and even though it’s still early on in the campaign, games like these tend to be very significant when it comes to the final position of a team. He will have one eye on the injury crisis at Internacional and will be very confident of his chances. However, returning from a long lay-off he will he have to make sure that his players are focused for this game because Internacional, even their injury worries could prove to be very dangeroud. If they anage to get all three points in this game, they will go level with league leaders Cruzeiro and put pressure on them. But, if they fail to get anything from this game then Internacional will overtake them and that is not a good situation to be in.

They were in decent form before the commencement of the World Cup winning two of their last five league games while drawing two and losing only one and the coach will hope that his side can restart the campaing with the same momentum. They are unbeaten in their last three games gathering seven out of a possible nine points. Internacional have drawn their last 5 away matches in Brasileirao and are undefeated in their last 5 home matches against Internacional in all competitions. Plus they have kept a clean sheet in their last 5 home matches against Internacional in all competitions.

Internacional are currently 5th in the league table and are level on points with Cruzeiro, their opponents for this game, and only trail behind on the basis of goal difference. The coach will be looking to neutralize that difference by winning all three points from this game and overtaking their opponents. Furthermore, they are only three points behind Cruzeiro as well and could go level on points with the league leaders if the games from the round go their way. However, thos are not the only stakes as they are only one point ahead of Gremio and Goias and only two points ahead of the likes of Atletico Mineiro, Sport and Santos and all these teams could potentially overtake them at the end of this round if Internacional fail to get anything from this game. The coach will be wondering about his players form coming into this form owing to the ong lay off because of the World Cup as the players need to be really sharp for this encounter if they are to get anything from this game and even a single moment of complacency could cost them. One thing that the coach will be worrying about is the injury crisis. Many of the injured players have made a return to the side during the lay off period but most of the key players are still out injured and will not be able to feature in this game.

They were not in the best of form before the start of the World Cup and the coach will be glad with the lay off, allowing him to regroup his players and inspire them to put in better performances. They won only one of their last five games while drawing three and and suffering their first defeat of the season during that run of five games. The coach will be hoping that his side can restart their campaing in a better way and grab all three points in this one. Internacional have drawn their last 5 away matches in Brasileirao.

Corinthians have no real injury worries ahead of this game apart from Walters who will not be available for this game. Elias is expected to start this game alongside Ralf after having a lot of training time with his new team mates. New signing Nicolas Lodeiro will however not start this game and will have to wait for his debut.

Internacional have welcomed back many players from injury, during the long lay off but are still without many key players. Maurieds, Alex, Otavio and Charles Aranguiz are still out with injuries and will not be available for this game. Wellington will also miss out as he is suspended for this one.
