Dosu advocates for separate award for goalkeepers

Olympic gold medallist, Joseph Dosu has advised the African football ruling body (CAF) to consider a separate award to honour goalkeepers who have been fantastic each year just as it does for the players. The former Nigerian safe-hands made his opinion known few days after two goalkeepers suffered similar fate at the African Player of the Year (APOTY) and the FIFA Ballon d’Or awards announced recently.

On the 8th of January this year, Nigerian and Lille FC of France goalkeeper, Vincent Enyeama had to console himself by being the first safe-hands on the continent to get as close as the final three contestants for the award after he was adjudged not to have done enough to beat both Aubemayang and the eventual winner Toure to the coveted award.

A concerned Dosu stated that Strikers and goal hungry Midfielders are always at an advantage to win the awards while the goalkeepers and defenders whose basic duty doesn’t include struggling for goals are usually relegated to the back stage. He noted that same was the fate of Manuel Neuer at the recent Ballon d’Or awards.

Despite the fact that a defender has won the APOTY awards once, the Atlanta 1996 Olympic football gold medallist insisted that it would do African football a lot of good if defenders and goalkeepers have different awards to slug out between themselves.

Despite suggesting an ‘African Goalkeeper of the Year’ awards, he was quick to reiterate the fact that goalkeepers that distinguish themselves enough to be considered as the best player should not be restricted in the event where CAF decides to adopt his idea.

Dosu further explained that over the last 12 months, Enyeama was awesome for both club and country but his position as a goalkeeper denied him the opportunity to win the award. The former Nigerian international was however quick to add that the country’s failure to qualify for the upcoming African Cup of Nations might also have contributed to Enyeama’s woes.
