Eto’o is a gift from the gods

Everton manager, Roberto Martinez has claimed that landing Cameroonian lethal forward Samuel Eto’o was a gift from the football gods. Eto’o was magnificent in the Toffees last game against Burnley and now the manager is so convinced to the extent that he has begun to plan for another year-long contract for the striker.

Samuel Eto’o got on the score sheet for the Toffees very early with a powerful header in off the cross bar. It was too long before Danny Ings levelled the scores when he took the ball round Tim Howard to level Burnley up. It rested on Romelu Lukaku to restore Everton’s lead in the second half but was constantly overshadowed by the more experienced Eto’o. The former Barcelona man sealed the win for Everton when he sent in a curling effort in the second half.

Sometimes in August when the Toffee boss met with Eto’o over coffee, one his fears was whether the ageing striker could replicate his exploits for Barcelona few years back but with his performance last weekend couple with the comments from the manager, it is obvious that Samuel Eto’o is already endearing himself to the fans of the Merseyside outfit.

On the Cameroonian’s contract, there was a clause that indicated that provided he could make at least 15 appearances for the Toffees, a new year long deal could be available, and for a player who ignored better offers from several Middle Eastern clubs and even a possibility of Champions League football with Dutch outfit Ajax, that is about the least that the club could do for him. Considering the interest that Eto’o showed in signing for the club, manager, Roberto Martinez believes that the club had been number one on Eto’o’s list for a while now.

The striker who was with league leaders Chelsea just last year has already made 5 of the required 15 appearances for his new club although four of those have been from the bench and with his current form he could appear for a sixth time when Everton faces Swansea on Saturday.
