Gerard Pique denies EPL move

Reports emerging from Spain have indicated that Barcelona’s prolific defender Gérard Pique is certainly not switching to the Premier League. This development have in fact been confirmed by Catalan based newspaper Sport. Two English Premier League big wigs, Chelsea and Manchester United have been seriously linked with a move to sign the 27-year-old.

Although Pique’s form has been ephemeral to say the least this season and the manager Luis Enrique had also used him cautiously, it appears that he is not desperate to force a move out of Barca and as in fact stated his intentions to see out the rest of his career at the club.

This will serve as a big blow to Manchester United especially as their back-line has been very frail this season. After the exodus of 2 of their most experienced defenders in Nemanja Vidic and Rio Ferdinand this season, and a spell of incessant injuries sustained by other defenders, the Red Devils have been finding it difficult to keep clean sheets this season.

To handle the problem at the back, manager, Louis van Gaal has handed professional debuts to two youth team defenders, Paddy McNair and Tyler Blacklet. Chelsea also have a need for the defender, albeit not as dire as their Manchester rivals as the league leaders still have a formidable defensive block in the efficient partnership forged by John Terry and Garry Cahill.

However, this doesn’t mean that either of the English clubs still cannot lure the defender over, because if Luis Enrique continues to be used sparingly, he might be looking for a club where he will get more time and if a player of his calibre were to switch to Old Trafford, then more than a quarter of Louis van Gaal’s defensive worries will have been solved. Similarly, if it is Chelsea who eventually snaps him up, then José Mourinho would have found himself a worthy successor for the ageing John Terry.
