Premier League Betting Tips: Southampton v Chelsea

By on December 27, 2014

Another tough test for Ronald Koeman’s side as Southampton host Chelsea FC at St. Mary’s Stadium on Sunday night as they look to cement their place in the top 4 and keep the likes of West Ham and Arsenal at bay.

Southampton have regained their lost form in recent weeks. After five successive defeats in all comeptitions, they have bounced back with two wins out of two in the past weeks and look set to again embark on a good winning streak. Ronald Koeman will be happy that even with the poor run of form throughout last month, they still are in the top 4 and are in pole position to earn a Champion’s League qualification spot. However with 32 points from eighteen games, they are only 3 points behind 3rd placed Manchester United. Manchester United face Tottenham Hotspur this weekend and if that game goes in Southampton’s favor, and the Saints pick up all 3 points in this one, they could ifnd themselves level on points with the Red Devils come the end of the weekend. Furthermore, the Saints are just a point ahead of West Ham United and 2 points ahead of Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur. Therefore, this game is also important if they are to maintain their lead over the chasing pack of teams. If Southampton drop points here, it would allo West Ham and Arsenal and even Tottenham to overtake them and occupy the 4th spot. Southampton are playing at home and the home advantage might be enoguht o earn them a draw here. A Southampton win is however unlikely.

Southampton have gone back to winning ways. After a disappointing four games without a win, they have won their last two games and coach Ronald Koeman will be hoping that the side can use that confidence in this game well. There last league game was the 3-1 boxing day win away to Crystal Palace. Southampton have not won against Chelsea in 10 of their last 11 games.

Chelsea are currently leading the pack in the Premier League this season. They are top of the table with 45 points from eighteen games and it seems that coach Jose Mourinho is on his way to another league title. The Blues face competition from only one other team, for the league title and that is Manuel Pellegrini’s Manchester City. The Citizens are so far 3 points behind Chelsea. Manchester City will face Burnley on Sunday and are the clear favorites to win all 3 points from that game. If Chelsea do not gather all 3 points from this game, then it would give Pellegrini’s side a golden chance to heat up the competition for the title. Southampton have not fared well against the top 4 sides this season, losing against the likes of Arsenal, Manchester United and Manchester City and Jose Mourinho will be confident that his side can replicate the same results here. But considering the recent good form of Ronald Koeman’s men, they might pose a threat for Chelsea. Chelsea are the clear favorites here but if things donot go their way, they might have to settle for a draw, at a tough away ground.

Chelsea have been in excellent form recently having won all of their last five games in all competitions. Chelsea have kept a clean sheet in 6 of their last 7 matches in the Premier League and are undefeated in 20 of their last 21 matches in the Premier League. Their last league game was a 2-0 win against West Ham United at Stamford Bridge on boxing day.

Southampton will have to make do without the services of Jay Rodriguez, Sam Gallagher and Jack Cork who are out with injuries. Furthermore, Jake Hesketh is doubtful for this game and will be assessed closer to kick off. Dusan Tadic is expected to start this game while the returning Jose Fonte will also regain his spot in the starting XI as Ronald Koeman is expected to start with 5 at the back.

Chelsea have no real injury worries ahead of this game and Jose Mourinho has a fully fit squad to chose from. Cesc Fabregas could move higher up the pitch with Oscar dropping to the bench. Jon Obi Mikel could start this game under such circumstances alongside Matic.
