Real Madrid Emerges Tops at El Classico

By on October 27, 2014

Real Madrid have made clear their title credentials when they trashed bitter rivals Barcelona to inch within just a single point behind the Catalan giants having won all of their last six games. It was Brazilian forward Neymar who lit up Santiago Bernabeu with just four minutes of play when he cut in through the Madrid defence to send a shot into the far corner. However, Ronaldo drew the host back on level terms when he slotted home from the spot after Gérard Pique was adjudged to have handled the ball inside the box.

Barcelona’s new boy Luis Suarez started for his new employers but his efforts weren’t enough to secure any point. He was later subbed off in the second half. Although the Uruguayan added intensity to the ferocious attack that Barcelona already boast of, but their defence went frail against the onslaught of Cristiano Ronaldo and his partners in crime. The first half ended without any extra time and the referee had issued 4 yellow cards.

Immediately after the resumption, Lionel Messi sent his free-kick straight at the wall after Modric’s foul on Suarez, that event was followed very quickly by a sharp break from Real Madrid, Benzema surged forward and teed up Ronaldo but Pique was quick to block it off to concede a corner. However, the resultant effect of Pique’s block became disastrous as Pepe rose highest to power in the cross from the corner. Barcelona did not lie down yet as Suarez dribbled in to the box but the Madrid defence was quick to dispossess him and the Uruguayan was in fact penalized for tugging at a defender’s shirt. The visitor’s pestered and Mathieu picked up a loose ball around the edge of Real Madrid’s box to end in a dicey effort which Casillas brilliantly parried.

In the 61st minute, Benzema nailed Barcelona’s coffin and it was a brilliant partnership form Isco and Ronaldo that produced the chance. Isco dealt with a mistake on Mascherano’s part and sent the ball over to Ronaldo who was at the centre of the pitch. In a rare attempt, Ronaldo chose to locate Rodriguez as against aiming at goal himself. His discretion paid off has Rodriguez sent an awesome pass to Karim Benzema who then gets it into the far corner.

Nothing could be more rewarding than to defeat a bitter rival convincingly, and that is what Real Madrid have done. With their current run of form, one can expect many more feats from the current European Champions.
