UEFA Champions League: Paris St. Germain v Chelsea

By on February 18, 2015

Paris St. Germain welcome Chelsea to the Parc des Princes on Tuesday night for the first leg of this Round of 16 fixture, as the Parisiens look to take revenge after being knocked out by the Blues last year, at the quarter final stage.

Paris St. Germain will have revenge on their minds as the get ready to face Jose Mourinhos and his Chelsea side. Last year, the two sides met in the Champion’s League group stages. The Parisiens won the first leg at home with an imposing 3-1 scorelin but faled to impress in the away leg at Stamford Brige. Chelsea striker Demba Ba scored the Blues’ second goals of the game right at the death to help them progress to th enext round. Laurent Blance will be hoping that his side can avoid another smilar situation. They have been in shaky form recently and even though they boast one of the most balanced squads in Europe, they still fail to click at times which was evident from their recent draw against Caen in the Ligue 1. Paris St. Germain gave away a 2 goal lead to end the game 2-2. Another bad day in the defensive department like that and they could be staring at a couple of away goals as Chelsea have a very healthy attacking lineup. The key to this game is a good defense. If they can keep a solid backline and avoid conceding an away goal in the early stages of the game, frustrate Chelsea then they could find spaces in their backline and find a goal or two. Laurent Blanc’s side had a game on the weekend and with fatigue coming into play, it could affect his starting lineup.

Paris St. Germain have been in good form recently having won three of their last five games while drawin two. Their last game was the disappointing 2-2 draw with Caen in the Ligue 1 and Laurent Blanc would be hoping for a better defensive display in this game. PSG have failed to score in three of their four encounters with Chelsea.

Chelsea are enjoying a brilliant campaign under Jose Mourinho as they find themselves at the top of the Premier League table with a massive lead over Manchester City. They were knocked out of the FA Cup in one of the shocks of the season but they are still in the Champion’s League and no doubt Jose Mourinho would be hoping for a good run in this tournament. The Portuguese manager has lifted the title twice before, but has failed to do so with Chelsea. With his experience in the competition, the fans will be hoping that he can start a good run in this year’s edition and maybe go on to win the title. Chelsea are certainly one of the favorites this season. They have been in good form recently and although their football has not been flattering at times, it does get them good results which matters the most. Like last season, they are playing the first leg away from home and Mourinho will lead his team into this game with the same intent as last year. They will set up to frustrate Paris St. Germain and stop them from scoring while trying to find an away goal. Chelsea will surely not be focused on winning the game, but instead finding an away goal as they will play the second leg at Stamford Bridge and can fight for a win in that leg. With no Premier League fixtures on the last weekend, Chelsea come into this game after a week long layoff and a proper rest which could be key in this game.

Chelsea have been in great form recently themselves having won three of their last five games while losing one and drawing the other. That loss came against Bradford in the FA Cup. Their last game was the last grasp win against Everton in the Premier League. Chelsea are undefeated in their last 6 matches in the Champions League.

Paris St. Germain have a few absentees ahead of this game and unfortunately, all of them are key players in Laurent Blanc’s system. Yohan Cabaye, Serge Aurier and Lucas Moura will miss out owing to injuries while Marquinhos is doubtful for this game and will be assessed closer to kickoff. It means that Thiago Motta is set to start this one at the base of the midfield with Ezequiel Lavezzi starting alongside Ibrahimovic and Cavani.

Chelsea boast a fully fit squad ahead of this game and Jose Mourinho has the luxury of picking hi best starting XI. Jon Obi Mikel is a doubt though and could be left out of the matchday squad altogether. Kurt Zouma could retain his starting role alongside John Terry which means that Gary Cahill will have to make do with a place on the bench. Diego Costa is also set to start this one.
