FIFA has released a 23-man list of the world’s finest. These are players who have impressed for both club and country over the last one year. Germany’s world cup winning side has 6 players listed which is not surprising considering their level of competence and accomplishment at the football mundial in Brazil.

The current best player in the world Cristiano Ronaldo is still in pole position to clinch the award again this year having recently won the La Liga best forward, best goal and best player of the season awards ahead of Barcelona’s duo of Lionel Messi and Neymar. Messi is still present on the list mainly for leading his country to the finals of the world cup before they lost out to the eventual winner Germany. His new team mate, Suarez could have gotten himself a place amongst the ‘G-23’ but he couldn’t, after he received a 4-month ban for biting a member of the Italian team, Giorgio Chiellini during their world cup tie.

Apart from Real Madrid’s Gareth Bale, no other Briton was deemed worthy of the list but the Premier League made up for it with a minority of 5 places. Three Premier League managers were also shortlisted for the coach of the year.

Of the five players listed who ply their trade in England, Chelsea parades three of them in Eden Hazard, Diego Costa and Thibaut Courtois. The other two was shared one each by both of the Manchester giants, Manchester City has Yaya Toure in their fold while Manchester United pride themselves with Angel Di Maria.

On his twitter handle, an obviously excited Bale tweeted: ‘I’m honoured to be included on the shortlisted for the Ballon d’Or this year among so many world class players. Good luck to everyone!!’

A portion relevant to the selection for the candidates in the FIFA guidebook read: ‘the selection criteria for the players of the year (men’s and women’s) are: sporting performances as well as general behaviour on and off the pitch from 30 November 2013 until 21 November 2014.’

The full list of the selected players include: Gareth Bale, Karim Benzema, Diego Costa, Thibaut Courtois, Cristiano Ronaldo, Angel Di Maria, Mario Gotze, Eden Hazard, Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Andres Iniesta, Toni Kroos, Philipp Lahm, Javier Mascherano, Lionel Messi, Thomas Muller, Manuel Neuer, Neymar, Paul Pogba, Sergio Ramos, Arjen Robben, James Rodriguez, Bastian Schweinsteiger, and Yaya Toure.
